Carl Scariati, bassist, composer

Carl received a B.A. degree in Mathematics and post-B.A. Teacher Certification from Montclair State University. He taught mathematics at Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest and Old Tappan while also teaching bass privately for many years. Carl has also held management positions in Information Technology for Prudential and Aetna, and has recently returned to teaching mathematics in the New Jersey public school system.

Many of Carl's intriguing original pieces have been performed by the Loren Daniels Trio and are featured on its 2000 release Like Fun. Interestingly, the ballad Stardance was originally recorded by the Kent Eanes Quintet on its 1983 release Fresh Air, and the piece had also received European airplay when Mr. Eanes chose to perform it when he was the featured guest on a live jazz radio broadcast during a visit to Copenhagen. More recently, Carl was a featured guest, along with Loren Daniels, on the WFDU radio program Jazz Influences hosted by Marc Copland.

Carl has been playing bass professionally and composing for the past 30 years and has also performed with the group Phase, appearing in both traditional and jazz-fusion formats. In 1981, the group released the fusion recording Fusion Quartet Comprovisations, which was described by critic Tom Bingham (Audio Magazine and Cadence) as "an album that challenges and stimulates the listener". Referring to the recording as a whole, and the Scariati composition Mobius in particular, Bingham observes, "As with the entire album, Mobius demands not only to be heard, but to be listened to."

Carl has performed with numerous noted artists, including pianists Loren Daniels, Kris Davis, Regan Ryzuk, Bill Brown and Vinnie Partesi, guitarists Chris Amelar, Jim DeAngelis and Jim Yanda, saxophonists Mark Gross, Dan Willis, Jonathan Lorentz, Bob Ackerman and Nick Franciosa, flutist Kent Eanes, trumpeters Freddie Hendrix, Reggie Pittman and Dave Brown, trombonist Clark Gayton, drummers Chuck Fertal, Nick Scheuble, Ronnie Glick, Mark Morelli, Richard Lee and Bruce Jackson, and singers Lonnie Youngblood, Karen Bartholemew, Janan and Tiny Tim. Carl counts among his greatest influences Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Ray Brown, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Johnny Hartmann, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Steve Lacy, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, Scott LaFaro, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Anthony Braxton, Dave Holland, Charlie Haden and Eddie Gomez.
